Read the Transcript: You're listening to Functional Wellness with Dr. Alison and today we are going to discuss what you need to know about collagen. Now, you have probably heard of collagen, and maybe even tried a few brands. Some people like to add this to their coffee or shakes for added protein and nutritional benefits. I love adding collagen into my protocols because it is a game changer for gut health. Basics of collagen Collagen is what gives your skin its elasticity and your body produces this naturally, but is also something that declines with age, just like how we discussed NAD last week. Collagen is a protein and is a major part of your ligaments, skin, muscles, and tendons. There are many different types of collagen that our body produces based on what function it is doing. When you don't have enough collagen you might notice that your skin is thinner, weaker, and more prone to outbreaks, rashes, eczema, and wrinkles. You might also notice that your joints are more painful, and lose flexibility and strength. The biggest benefits of taking collagen can be: - improving skin health, elasticity, and strength - improving bone mineral density, research shows that can increase bone density be 5-8%! - reducing leaky gut symptoms and IBS - improved joint function, mobility, and lower pain - boosts metabolism, muscle mass, and energy - improves liver health - supports cardiovascular health - reducing skin complaints like eczema *my son had an eczema patch on his face after a round of antibiotics, and this was at the height of his PANDAS diagnosis and flare. When I added collagen into his protein shakes it immediately went away. And now, 9 years later, whenever he does have an eczema flare, it's usually only once a year, I add the collagen back in and he feels better in a few days. This also means that he has been eating too much junk food and needs his diet cleaned up and his gut supported too. What causes collagen loss? Our body's sources of collagen naturally decline as we age. Lifestyle has a major impact on this rate, smoking and excessive alcohol have been shown to degrade collagen more quickly, as well as increased sun exposure.

Are you a COVID long hauler? Did you know that viral infections can cause an increase in the production of an enzyme that breaks down collagen and as result ligaments are compromised & this is why we are seeing so many physical injuries with long haul COVID. Eosinophils, which are an immune cell, also stimulate the collagnase enzymes, which typically raise with parasites, worms, mycotoxins, and maybe some dysbiotic gut. But if the sinuses are highly inflamed then it will cause eosinophils to go high too. I have seen people say "don't buy collagen, it's a waste because your body naturally makes it and taking it as a supplement doesn't help". This is like saying our body was born with water in it so we don't need to drink any. Ridiculous right? How to get more collagen in your diet You can definitely add in dietary sources of collagen such as bones and skin of animals, sea food and bone broth. However, you probably aren't excited about the idea of eating marrow or skin on a regular basis. You will also want to ensure you are getting enough protein in your daily diet, at least 100g per day because our body will use amino acids to synthesize collagen from our foods. You will also want to add in the precursors of collagen in like Vitamin C. Why I recommend MetaPWR Advantage: I have personally tried many different brands of collagen and I can honestly say that I have only noticed a major difference with Great Lakes Collagen and the doTERRA MetaPWR Advantage. Most of the products I have tried either taste horrible, don't mix well with liquids and cliump up, no one wants to drink that, or just aren't effective in changing health. Topical collagen has been shown to not be as effective because the collagen fibers are too large to be absorbed by the skin and the same goes for nutritional patches. I have been taking the MetaPWR advantage daily now for three weeks. I talked about this product in last week's NAD talk and how it is changing cellular health and longevity. So today we are going to focus on the collagen aspect of this powder. I have noticed that my hair is doing really well, and that is an area I really struggle with since I lost most of mine in 2020 from being so sick. I have been wearing wigs for the past two years but it is slowly growing back. After three weeks, I haven't seen much growth, that's not long enough of a time, however, I am seeing a lot of baby hairs and my hair is much stronger. My nails, which are pretty brittle from my medications are getting stronger as well. My biggest change is in my energy, which i relate to both the collagen and NAD. The collagen in the MetaPWR is really different because it has 9 different types of collagen instead of just one or two which means you are affecting your whole health, not just hair or skin. With our delivery of the following nine different collagen types, we’re emphasizing the whole-body role of collagen: • Collagen Type I (one) is related to skin beauty. • Collagen Type II (two) is related to bone protection and is the main component of cartilage. • Collagen Type IV (four) is the main protein of the basement membrane, connecting the dermis and the epidermis and forming a network structure to make the basement membrane malleable. • Collagen Type V (five) is related to the regular arrangement of collagen fibers, stabilizing the structures of Type I and Type II collagen. • Collagen Type VI (six) regulates muscle function and stabilizes cell membranes, inhibiting cell apoptosis and antioxidant stress. • Collagen Type IX (nine) is an important component of cartilage and is mainly distributed in the cartilage cells of growth plates, joints, and intervertebral discs. • Collagen Type XXV (twenty-five) inhibits the fibrillation of amyloid beta peptide. • Col1a2 protein, which is collagen fibrillin. • And finally, vacuolar protein sorting 37A is involved in cell growth and differentiation. doTERRA has really focused in on research and creating a significantly bioavailable product, which means you are going to absorb and use more of this than any other collagen product on the market. We want to use a powder to ensure that it is doing to be effective. Our collagen is from sustainably harvested cold water marine fish that has been hydrolyzed to increase absorption and is over 70% tripeptide fragments, which means it is 12 times more absorbable. Most collagens that are liquid are sterilized and that reduces the nutritional content as well as the antioxidants. Other products have about 15=35% tripeptide content which means you aren't going to use and absorb as much of the proteins. And the additional ingredients like liposomal vitamin C, rose apple extract, and hyaluronic acid, help your body produce its own collagen and stabilize the collagen already in your body. This means your skin will retain the right amount of water to prevent dry or damaged skin. How to use collagen I would recommend adding collagen to cold water, smoothies, or shakes. High temperatures can damage or eliminate the additional beneficial active ingredients, like vitamins, flavonoids, and polyphenols. Some of these other delicate ingredients are part of what makes MetaPWR Advantage unique and effective. In the past, I have made collagen gummies with collagen powder, cherry juice and a few other ingredients. This worked really well because I had control over the ingredients, they were easy to make, and my kids loved eating them!
