Read the Transcript If you're on my newsletter list, you probably know that I am offering an early bird discount for my January program called Functional Metabolism. While the program officially launches in January, you can join now and get an extra FREE 6 weeks of care and $500 off! But what is functional metabolism and how can that help you? Functional metabolism is my term for using functional medicine as a base to learn about your body, how your unique metabolism works, and allow your body to quite simply, work the way it is supposed to. This is when you feel your best energetically, you are sleeping great, your stress is managed, your weight and size are where you are most comfortable. Your hormones are balanced, libido is good, and you feel active and happy. You know I hate talking about weight loss and leading with that as my theme of the month or marketing, but it is really one of the most common reasons people come to see me. As always, they have 10 other major symptoms going on, which helps us understand why the body is holding on to weight. And really, that is the goal, to discover why your body is carrying extra weight and how you can best support your health and metabolism. There is so much that I want you to know about metabolism and we could really talk for hours about this topic. When I went to the library to do more research there are thousands of books on metabolism, most of them have horrible incorrect information about eating less, working out more, pushing harder, no excuses! But we know that's where you might lose some weight, feel okay for a few days or weeks, and then boom, weight comes back and sometimes even more. How can you lose weight, fat, inches, without sacrificing your health? And what will work best for your body type? First, figure out what your body is telling you. Where are you carrying weight? If it is in your belly it might be cortisol or estrogen. If it is hips and thighs, that could be insulin or estrogen as well. If you are gaining weight everywhere it could by thyroid. Other's with beer bellies have liver congestion. Then, you want to get your blood work done and any further testing. I can't tell you how many people come to me convinced their thyroid is a mess, but it's actually okay. Or that they are estrogen dominant, but their hormone tests are normal. Then we get to really dive in to what's happening and what organ systems, hormones, and functions are struggling. If you assume you have one issue and go out and spend all your money on say a thyroid cookbook, iodine, supplements, and do a full thyroid program without ever testing your blood and hormones and I mean the full panel as well, not just TSH, you might actually do more harm to your body. Next, it's safe to assume you have a blood sugar imbalance. This is why I am loving the changes I am seeing with the new MetaPWR system from doTERRA that is specifically focused on balancing blood sugar during meals and throughout the day. Low and high blood sugar can cause a hormone cascade in your body that encourages your body to store fat, increase hunger signals, and increase fatigue. Which of course, makes you want to snack on junk food, skip your workout, and try to sleep. So this is a great and easy starting place to really change your health, metabolism, energy, and sleep. I'll link our challenge group, or really it's a support group here as well so you can join us! How do you prep for a weight loss program, diet, or fitness program? Now, you're ready to jump in to something, anything that will help you feel better. I get it, I've been there. We want big changes so we make big changes. We cut our food and calorie intake way down, we eat 'super clean', we start a new workout program. Then you're tired, sore, cranky, hungry, and you maybe lose a pound or two, but eventually you tell yourself the program isn't sustainable and you have to eat real food. That is so normal and necessary for your body to keep functioning. So how do we prevent this yo-yo pattern and make sure that you can stay the course? First, willpower has nothing to do with this. If you feel like crap because of a program you are doing, then it is not working for you. And you are trashing your metabolism and just making it harder on yourself. Your hormones will overtake your willpower and demand that you eat. It's really not your fault. Second, start low and slow. Yes, eating less, about 30% of your maintenance calories. To figure that out: Let's say you weigh 200 pounds: 200 pounds x 15 = 3000 maintenance calories per day We want your caloric deficit to be 30%, so now we'll multiply your 3000 maintenance calories by .7: 3000 x .7 = 2100 calories Then, start with slow walking. Walking is the best thing for increasing insulin sensitivity and supporting your metabolism without adding unnecessary stress or injury to your body. Jumping into a big program will only make you more tired and confuse your hormones. Start low and slow and build up. Next, there are a few metabolism practices that I love to incorporate. First is breathing and breath work. I use the Wim Hoff app or his YouTube channel and follow along. Our body needs oxygen and we rarely focus on breathing as one of the main ways our body releases weight. The researchers chose to follow the path of these atoms when leaving the body. They found that when 10 kg of fat were oxidized, 8.4 kg were converted and excreted as carbon dioxide (CO2) via the lungs, and 1.6 kg became water (H20). Doing breathing exercises, holding your breath, 5.5 second breathing, and alternate nostril breathing will help increase the release of CO2 from your cells and out of your body, as well as calming your nervous system and Vagus nerve. Win win! Other metabolism supporters include alternating cold and hot water in your shower. This is great for also stimulating your Vagus but improving metabolic rate. Yes, this sucks. I hate cold water. But it is helpful. I suggest doing a warm shower, then using cold to wash your hair with shampoo and rinse, then warm to wash your body add conditioner to your hair, then cold again to rinse the conditioner. Start slow and not as cold until you learn what your body can tolerate. Some people say to do 30 seconds of each alternating, others say 10 minutes warm, 3 cold, some say just at least alternate and start with 30 seconds of cold water. Lastly, get started with the MetaPWR system and add in digestive enzymes like Terrazyme and probiotics like PB assist to prep your gut for any changes in food quality so you don't experience the detoxing effect from LPS in your gut. How can I help? I am so excited to launch this program with you and really support you individually in changing your health. The program includes your blood work, supplements, consults, and we are going to make sure that what you are doing is working and tweak as we learn about your body. You can schedule a quick free call with me if you have questions or message me on Facebook. Yes, your kids can be on the call with you, or you can be in the school pick up line, that's where I will be :)
