Hidden Reasons You Can’t Lose Weight


Are you trying to lose weight but it seems like nothing you do works? You have tried every diet plan, supplement, exercise program, and you just stay stuck or end up gaining more weight? You aren’t alone! And there are many hidden reasons why this is happening to you.

I’m Dr. Alison and you are listening to functional wellness with Dr. Alison.


I work with many patients whose main goal is to lose weight. And sometimes it seems like nothing they do is working. Most of the time these people are told that they are lying about what they are eating. But I know they aren’t. Or they are told they need more will power, dedication, and just push through! But that isn’t the issue either.

I see you. You are working hard to stay consistent. You might ‘slip up’ once in a while with an extra treat, or go out to eat. But that doesn’t keep you overweight.



Here are a few recently researched reasons you might be holding on to weight despite all your hard work:


My first question: do you consistently use antiseptic mouthwash on a daily basis? You might be putting yourself at risk for Type 2 diabetes. Some research has shown that using mouthwash 2 or more times a day can increase your risk of pre-diabetes/diabetes by 50%.


Our mouth has a vast bacterial complex that supports the nitrate-nitrite-nitric oxide pathway. When we reduce the amount of nitric oxide in our system, this increases insulin resistance.

I have other thoughts about this including how bacteria signal to our immune system what we are taking in and how our body needs to respond. How does the mouthwash affect our salivary glands, the enzymes in our saliva that break down carbohydrates, and does it affect satiety hormones like leptin? The research papers don’t say, or I didn’t see this, but do the people who overuse mouth wash skip brushing and flossing?


What can you do: first skip the anti-septic mouthwash. If you need to use this, you can use doTerra’s On Guard MouthWash. It is alcohol free and will not disrupt your salivary glands and enzymes. I also love the On Guard toothpaste and floss!


You can also add in nitric oxide support to help improve blood flow, brain health, exercise recovery, and immune health.


Next: do you take antihistamines daily? Any antihistamine from Benadryl, Zyrtec, Allegra, or Singulair are linked to weight gain. Even more upsetting is that the newer generations of this drug that don’t cause drowsiness were more significantly related to weight gain. The reason behind the gain is certainly unclear right now. Researchers believe that these medications directly impact the metabolism. Others say that these medications cause people to become lethargic and not want to work out.


Personally, I had to start taking OTC and prescription anthistamines to counteract the severe hives that developed from mast cell activation after I had Covid. I didn’t change anything in my diet, exercise plan, sleep, but I ended up gaining about 25 pounds. And yes, my doctors said it’s my hormones and just glossed over it. But I know it’s from the medication.


What can you do: if you are looking for a natural route you can choose doTERRA’s TriEase capsules for seasonal support and you can use this all year round. I also recommend Allerplex, Antronex, and Livaplex to support the liver clearance of histamine and support the immune system.


Lastly, infections such as Candida (aka yeast) and biofilm (like we talked about in the last podcast) can be a cause of weight gain.


Candida normally lives in our body but when it is allowed to grow, or remains hidden and toxic within biofilm, it can mount an attack on your body. Candida is linked to fatigue, can cause sugar cravings, triggers hormonal imbalances, and can overwhelm the immune system. All of this can increase cortisol, our stress hormone, which adds belly weight and weight gain in general.


What can you do: Get tested with an organic acids test or GI Map and follow a specific protocol for you. I usually have my patients either use doTERRA’s GX assist or the GI-Synergy Products from Apex energetics. Not only do these disrupt the biofim, but they also get to the source of the candida.


And remember to pulse your herbal support with probiotics. Meaning to take the ‘anti’ support for 10 days and then do the probiotic support for 10 days and continue to switch back and forth.
